At 16, met Shoya Yoshida and was deeply impressed by the philosophy of Mingei. At 18, met Bernard Leach and decided to pursue a career as a potter. In 1967, became an apprentice at the Izumo kiln in Shimane Prefecture, and after four years of training, opened Iwai Kiln in Iwami Town, Iwami District, Tottori Prefecture in 1971. In 1998, established “Craft Museum Iwai Kiln,” consisting of the kiln and workshop, an exhibition hall, a reference museum, and a café and dining space. Over a 60-year career in ceramics, has trained many apprentices.
