Calcium’s physiological role is to maintain the strength and hardness of bones. It is responsible for the balanced functioning of muscles, the heart, and the nervous system. Its deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and tooth decay. It reduces the tendency for inflammation and thereby the unpleasant inflammatory symptoms associated with allergies. It aids in the absorption of Vitamin B12 and supports the formation of certain hormones. During pregnancy, in growing adolescents, elderly people, and women around menopause, a calcium-rich diet is extremely important. An average adult’s daily calcium requirement is about 800 mg.
