FULL SUN – SPINACH, Bloomsdale Long Standing – Spinacea oleracea, native to central and southwest Asia, the plant was first cultivated in what is now Iran. Today it is still the most popular spinach cultivated. It is incredibly winter hardy and, if protected will make it through most winters. The deep green leaves are fleshy and heavily savoyed. Flavor is strong. Bloomsdale Longstanding can be sown in the early spring for a summer crop and in early summer for a fall crop. Spinach seed will not germinate if the soil temp is above 70 degrees. In the spring, plant as soon as the ground can be worked. Soil should be deeply spaded before planting. Rows should be 18 in. apart.
